Camp Starlight
Students will serve as cabin counselors and activity specialists at Camp Starlight, a project of Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) that provides children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS with a week-long residential camping experience that is safe, accepting, and free of stigma. Students in this course are required to attend several class sessions at PSU before camp. In addition to their service at camp, students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to complete one or more final products in collaboration with our community partner. Registration in the course requires instructor approval; contact Vicki Reitenauer at 503-725-5847 or vicr@pdx.edu for more information or to begin the registration process.
The goals for this Capstone are as follows:
- To provide PSU Capstone students with a personally, academically, professionally, and creatively meaningful service-learning opportunity; and
- To further the mission of Camp Starlight and its host organization, Cascade AIDS Project, through the sustained service efforts of PSU Capstone students.
Project
One portion of your grade will be based on your final products and the team efforts required to complete them. Our community partner has identified three possible projects for us to complete: the development of presentations for various audiences about camp; written materials (brochures or flyers) that include personal testimonies from volunteers; and a visual display about camp to be used during tabling events, in volunteer and camper recruitment, and at Pride. During our first three class periods, you will choose teams to complete each project, and you will have time within your team to begin to get to know each other and discuss possible approaches for your project. Continuing work on the projects will happen in the weeks between the end of camp and our final class meeting, and you will present your products to the whole class at that final class meeting. The final product itself will be worth 25 points. The grade for each product will be co-determined by Angie in consultation with our whole class, and the grade for each product will be shared by all members of the team that created it.
Additionally, you will earn up to 25 points for your contributions to the team on which you serve to complete our final product. At the conclusion of the project, you will assess your own and your teammates' contributions to your collective efforts, and these assessments will become the basis for this grade. More details on this to follow.
