Interpretation of Sustainability
Many businesses and organizations, including Oregon State Park, have developed progressive plans to move their organizations toward sustainability. Often times sustainable practices are not shared with the public. This class will investigate the sustainability action plans from a variety of organizations, including Nike, Burgerville, Oregon State Parks and Weyerhaeuser. Students will then develop interpretive programs or exhibits, for Tryon Creek State Park, crafted to inform park visitors and inspire them toward adopting personally sustainable behaviors. Students will also receive Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Core Interpretive Training Certification.
Aims and Objectives: Students will:
- Work in an effective interdisciplinary collaborative group
- Explore different approaches to natural history and environmental education and interpretation
- Examine various techniques used by environmental organizations to convey their messages
- Develop an understanding of natural history interpretive techniques
- Complete an interpretive project for Tryon Creek State Park

Course Requirements:
1. Complete an interpretive project for Tryon Creek State Park. Projects will be assigned the first week of class.
2. Complete three written assignments. Written assignments include two 3 to 4 page reflective papers (due July 6th and August 17th) and a speakers journal (due August 17th). Complete assignment descriptions are outlined in the course calendar. All assignments must be typed and double-spaced. Written assignments must be handed in at the beginning of class on date due or e-mailed (word format) to the instructor on the date due. Late assignments will not receive full credit.
3. Prepare and present an interpretive program.
Students will work with Tyron Creek State Park to prepare interpretive materials, programs or exhibits to be used in the Nature Center and along the trails of the park. Collaborative groups will...
