Course Description:

Description:  Known as the "red ape," orangutans are one of the most intelligent, yet critically endangered animals on the planet and now is a crucial time for them. With less than 45,000 orangutans remaining in the world, they could be the first great ape to become extinct within our lifetime.  But there is hope - numerous organizations are working vigorously to prevent that from happening.

This Capstone partners with one of those organizations, the Orangutan Conservancy (orangutan.com), to further its goals of protecting orangutans in their natural habitat through research, capacity building, education and public awareness programs, and by supporting numerous on-the-ground efforts to save Southeast Asia’s only great ape.  Students will participate in the various aspects of grantwriting, including locating appropriate funders and ascertaining the needs of the community partner, as well as writing and reviewing grant proposals.  This is a fully online course, and a significant portion involves research and discussions regarding critical issues in wildlife conservation.

The end project will be a presentation and portfolio of grant proposals addressing the current needs of the Orangutan Conservancy. Please contact Kimberly Mukobi, kmukobi@pdx.edu, for more information.
